Momentum is the best indication of how you can expect your arrows to penetrate. It's so much more important than KE that we wanted to post this momentum and kinetic energy calculator here so you can figure out the real values of momentum and KE that your set-up is generating. Compare numbers and you'll see that fast light arrows may have an impressive KE, but that you can achieve much better momentum values with heavier arrows.

Note: 650 Grains is the heavy bone threshold - Shoot arrows of at least 650 grains with FOC values as high as you can get them. (19% minimum)

Enter a variety of numbers to see how it affects the actual momentum you're looking for.

FINDING THE FOC OF AN ARROW

Measure your arrow's overall length to the insert only. (Do Not include the point.) That is your length or value "L". Enter that in the total length field below.

Measure the distance from the valley of your nock to the balance point. That is your balance point or value "B". Enter that number in the balance point field below.

Enter the total length "L":

Enter the balance point length"B":

FOC = %

The AMO-Standard F.O.C. balance formula is: %FOC = (100x(A-L/2))/L

For those of you who prefer to calculate your FOC the old way with a calculator, this is for you:

A = Balance point as measured from the throat of the nock to the point of balance.
L = Total arrow length as measured from the throat of the nock to the back of the point.
(Do not include the length of the point in this measurement.)

1.  Measure the arrow length from the throat of the nock to the end of the shaft. (Back of the point) e.g. 28.5"

2.  Divide the total length number by two (2). (Or multiply it by 0.5.) e.g. 28.5/2 = 14.25 or 28.5 x 0.5 = 14.25

3.  Find the arrow's balance point. Measured from the nock throat to the balance point. e.g. 19.0"

4.  Subtract half the total length from the balance point number. e.g. 19.0" - 14.25" = 4.75"

5.  Multiply that result by 100. e.g. 4.75 x 100 = 475

6.  Now divide that number by the total arrow length. e.g. 475 / 28.5 = 16.6% FOC

Example:
A 28.50” (BOP) arrow has a balance point of 19.00”.

Half of the total arrow length is 14.25.

Subtract 14.25 from the 19" and you get 4.75".

Multiply that by 100 = 475.

Now divide 475 by the total length which is 28.5 = 16.6.

Your FOC measurement is 16.6%

Alaska Bowhunting Supply is dedicated to developing high quality arrows and broadheads that help bowhunters become successful even when things go wrong. Our arrows and broadheads, the GrizzlyStik System, have taken over 50 elephant and hundreds of Cape buffalo, Asiatic water buffalo, and all other big game animals that walk the planet. Our customer service is second to none and we back all our archery gear with a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee.

Our GrizzlyStik line of carbon arrows have taken the bowhunting world by storm. They're designed with the optimum mass weight for intense penetration. The continuous taper shaft design gives us an extreme forward of center (EFOC)advantage that other carbon arrows just don't have. They recover quickly from any bow and many former light-arrow compound shooters have found that the point of impact is not nearly as different as they expected. They're seeing all the advantages of increased penetration without the loss of trajectory they expected. GrizzlyStiks are available in raw shafting, as pre-finished arrows with your choice of real turkey feathers or vanes, and as custom arrows. With custom orders you choose the feathers or vanes that you'd like. You choose the feather colors and you even have a choice on arrow wraps, or cresting wraps. Even if you normally shoot wood arrows, once you try these GrizzlyStik carbons it's hard to go back. You just have to try some for yourself. Don't take our word for it, prove it to yourself.

In broadheads we have the famous Silver Flame broadheads - what we consider the best double bevel broadheads in the world as well as GrizzlyStik Maasai and GrizzlyStik Samurai two-piece single bevel broadheads.

If you haven't read the Dr Ed Ashby report you should do it now. Once you understand the benefits of single bevel broadheads you'll never use anything else again. Dr. Ashby has studied broadhead lethality and penetration for decades. He's one of the most respected authorities on broadhead performance in the world today. He helped us design what he considered the "perfect" broadhead and we named it after him.

Our new Ashby broadheads are amazing. The steep, wide 25% angle creates a tremendous wound channel for a two-bladed broadhead. The penetration has been phenomenal and we've already had pass-through's on Africa's black death, the cape buffalo. Our broadheads are quickly becoming the go-to broadhead for bowhunting any dangerous game. Some PH's have even requested that their clients use nothing but the Ashby broadhead. How's that for an endorsement? (In forged one-piece stainless single bevel broadheads we also offer: the re-designed 315 grain GrizzlyStik Nanook, a 150 grain GrizzlyStik Monarch and a 200 grain GrizzlyStik Monarch.)

The Nanook, another solid one-piece single bevel broadhead and the Samurai and Maasai broadheads are solid performers. GrizzlyStik Samurai broadheads are straight edged like the Ashby but offer a two-piece construction. They're available in: 125, 150, 175, and 200 grains. GrizzlyStik Maasai broadheads offer the convex edge like the Nanook and like the Samurai, are available in: 125, 150, 175, and 200 grains. With so many options now any bowhunter can find the perfect broadhead to match his hunting outfit. The advantages of the single bevel broadhead are cold hard fact. They've been tested and found to outperform any other kind of broadhead. Do yourself a favor, don't just read the reports, try some. Once you see what these broadheads can do you'll never want to leave home without them. If you have EVER had a shoulder blade come between you and your trophy you need to switch to GrizzlyStik single bevel broadheads. (With a 650 grain or greater arrow, tipped with one of our strong single bevel broadheads, you should make it through the shoulder blade of any animal in North America.)

Let's face it, in all archery, and bowhunting in particular, you have to have confidence in your equipment. If you use our GrizzlyStik system, that's the GrizzlyStik arrows and broadheads together, you should eliminate arrow or broadhead failure. Serious bowhunters know that it's difficult enough to get in range and then take a shot. The moment of truth is no time to hope your equipment is tough enough to get the job done. You know that "almost" doesn't cut it in bowhunting. Use equipment you can trust, use GrizzlyStik tapered carbon arrows and your choice of; GrizzlyStik Silver Flame broadheads, GrizzlyStik forged one piece Ashby, Nanook, Monarch 200, or Monarch 150 broadheads or our Maasai or Samurai two-piece single bevel broadheds. GrizzlyStik single bevel broadheads.

When it comes time to sharpen your broadheads, take a look at our: Work Sharp - Guided Field Sharpener they're perfect for the home and in hunting camp. They're a very versitile tool including diamond hones, broadhead wrench, ceramic hone, and leather strop.
